Stevenson Store Front Art Project

July, 2011

Stevenson Art Project

The EDC pitched the idea of preparing storefront displays to the owners of vacant storefronts in Stevenson as well as to local artists. The idea was widely embraced and the EDC started organizing all the supplies needed to create art displays. With Pat Hood’s ( significant help and expertise in creating the displays, three storefront art displays have been completed in vacant storefronts within downtown Stevenson. Feedback from local citizens has been great and overwhelmingly positive. The EDC’s overall goal is to create a more inviting space for people to experience as they walk by these storefronts while still allowing the owners to advertise the space for rent. This ongoing project would not be possible without contributions from the City of Stevenson, Skamania County Chamber of Commerce, and the Stevenson Business Association who are all consistent supporters of the EDC in its business and economic development activities in addition to all of their continued efforts to promote activities in our area.

In February 2011, the Oregon Supreme Court concluded that it would not hear an appeal by Friends of the Gorge of the Oregon Court of appeals decision issued in May of 2010 that sided with the Columbia River Gorge Commission (CRGC) on their plan amendment to modify zoning to allow for a recreational resort at the old Broughton Lumber Mill site. The next step will be for Skamania County to modify their National Scenic Area Ordinance to be consistent with the CRGC’s Management Plan Amendment.
